Elongdi Giant Outdoor Chess Set with Oversized Plastic Pieces and 71-Inch Chess Mat
This set stands out for its lightweight, foldable design and oversized pieces, making it perfect for outdoor gatherings and travel. Compared with the MegaChess sets that feature larger, more permanent pieces, the Elongdi set prioritizes ease of transport and quick setup, though its plastic components may not withstand prolonged outdoor exposure as well. The waterproof mat and included accessories add convenience for temporary playspaces, but the plastic material may wear faster with frequent use. Its size requires a decent outdoor area, but it offers a balanced mix of portability and visibility for casual players and families. The set’s large, 9.8-inch kings make gameplay visible from a distance, ideal for outdoor events.
Pros:- Oversized pieces enhance visibility and gameplay
- Waterproof, foldable mat for outdoor use
- Lightweight and portable for travel and outdoor activities
- Includes storage bins for organization
Cons:- Plastic pieces may be less durable over time
- Large size demands ample outdoor space
Best for: Families, event hosts, or outdoor enthusiasts seeking a portable, easy-to-setup chess experience
Not ideal for: Serious players or those looking for highly durable, long-term outdoor sets; the plastic pieces might degrade over time
- Number of Pieces:32
- King Height:9.8 inches
- Pawn Height:5.6 inches
- Chess Mat Size:63 x 70.9 inches
- Piece Weight:0.2 pounds (89 grams)
- Material:Plastic
- Includes:Storage box with lid, 4 grass spikes
Our verdict“This set is ideal for casual outdoor play and portability, but less suited for long-term outdoor durability.”
MegaChess Giant Plastic Chess Sets – Black and White – 1 to 4 Feet Tall with Quick-Fold Nylon Mat
This model offers the most versatility through its modular design, allowing players to add up to 7 pounds of weight for stability, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments. Unlike the Elongdi set, which emphasizes portability, this set focuses on stability and durability, especially with its weather-resistant HDPE pieces and quick-fold nylon mat. While it is heavier and requires more space for setup, it offers the advantage of customizable stability for uneven surfaces or windy conditions. Its large scale, from 1 to 4 feet, caters to a variety of game styles and audiences, making it ideal for educational settings, tournaments, or backyard use.
Pros:- Durable, weather-resistant HDPE material
- Modular design allows adding weight for stability
- Large sizes suitable for all ages and visibility
- Weather-resistant and UV protected
Cons:- Heavy to move without added weights
- Requires ample space for setup
Best for: Recreation centers, educators, or hosts who need a stable, durable, and customizable outdoor chess experience
Not ideal for: Casual players or those with limited outdoor space who prefer lightweight, easy-setup options
- Number of Sets:5
- Piece Height:1 foot to 4 feet
- Material:High-density polyethylene (HDPE)
- Includes:Quick-fold nylon chess mat, spikes for grass
- Weather Resistance:UV resistant, waterproof
- Weight Adjustment:Add up to 7 pounds of sand, water, or weight
Our verdict“This set is perfect for users who prioritize stability and durability over portability, especially in larger outdoor settings.”
MegaChess Giant Chess Set with 16-Inch Tall King – Outdoor Jumbo Game for Families
This set emphasizes easy handling with its sizable 16-inch king pieces, making it ideal for families, schools, and community events. Compared with the MegaChess set that features 1 to 4-foot pieces, this one is more manageable for users who want a big, engaging game without the heft of massive, difficult-to-move components. Its waterproof, UV-protected HDPE pieces withstand outdoor conditions well, though the absence of a board means you need to purchase one separately, which could add to the overall setup time and cost. The large, sturdy pieces are perfect for educational settings or casual backyard matches, but the size may demand more space than smaller sets.
Pros:- Durable, weather-resistant materials
- Large, easy-to-handle pieces
- Ideal for outdoor fun and educational activities
- Suitable for all ages
Cons:- Board not included, requiring additional purchase
- Size may require significant outdoor space
Best for: Families, educators, or community organizers seeking a large, accessible outdoor chess game
Not ideal for: Players seeking a complete, ready-to-play set with a board included or looking for more compact options
- Number of Pieces:32
- Piece Height:16 inches
- Material:High-density polyethylene (HDPE)
- Board Included:No
- Weather Resistance:UV protected, waterproof
Our verdict“This set is well-suited for family and community use, offering large visibility with manageable weight, but needs an extra board for gameplay.”
MegaChess Giant Chess Set with 16-Inch Tall King – Outdoor Yard Game with 32 Durable Plastic Pieces and Plastic Board
This set offers the convenience of a plastic board combined with large, weather-resistant pieces, making it a versatile choice for outdoor lawns, gardens, and recreational spaces. Its included plastic board enables immediate gameplay without additional purchases, unlike the set that lacks a board. Compared to the smaller 8-inch king set, this one’s larger pieces enhance gameplay visibility for larger groups or casual players. While the plastic construction ensures durability, it might lack the tactile authenticity of wood, and its size requires ample space for setup. It’s best suited for those who want a straightforward, all-in-one outdoor chess experience.
Pros:- Weather-resistant plastic pieces and board
- Large, easy-to-move pieces for all ages
- Complete set ready for outdoor gameplay
- Versatile for indoor and outdoor use
Cons:- Large size demands significant outdoor space
- Plastic pieces may feel less authentic than wood
Best for: Recreational parks, schools, or homeowners wanting an all-in-one outdoor chess setup with minimal fuss
Not ideal for: Players seeking a premium, authentic feel or a lightweight, portable set for frequent transport
- Number of Pieces:32
- King Height:16 inches
- Material:HDPE plastic
- Board Included:Yes
Our verdict“This set delivers convenience and durability for outdoor play but sacrifices some authenticity and portability for ease of use.”
MegaChess Large Chess Set 8-inch King with Checkers and Vinyl Mat
This set emphasizes portability with its smaller 8-inch king pieces and included vinyl mat, making it suitable for varied locations and casual play. Its design differs from the larger sets by focusing on convenience and adaptability, ideal for those needing a lightweight, easy-to-store option. The vinyl mat, while easy to roll up, is less durable outdoors and may wear quickly if left outside constantly. The sizable checkers and manageable pieces make it accessible for players of all ages, though the overall size limits the grandeur of gameplay compared to the giant 16-inch sets. It’s an excellent choice for casual groups or smaller outdoor spaces.
Pros:- Portable and easy to store
- Weather-resistant plastic pieces
- Includes checkers for added game variety
- Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
Cons:- Vinyl mat may wear outdoors over time
- Larger size may require more space for gameplay
Best for: Casual players, small outdoor spaces, or those who want a portable, easy-to-setup game
Not ideal for: Serious chess enthusiasts or outdoor event organizers requiring large, permanent setups
- King Height:8 inches
- Pawn Height:6 inches
- Checkers Size:3 inches
- Chess Mat Size:6-inch squares
- Material:Plastic
- Indoor/Outdoor:Yes
Our verdict“This set is ideal for casual, versatile play in limited spaces but isn’t meant for intensive outdoor use or highly durable setups.”
MegaChess Giant Plastic Chess Game Board, 9’10” x 9’10”
This oversized plastic chessboard stands out for its weather-resistant design and massive 9’10” x 9’10” dimensions, making it ideal for permanent outdoor installations or high-traffic patios. Unlike the MegaChess sets with large pieces, this board provides a spacious surface that can accommodate virtually any giant chess set, offering flexibility for different styles. However, it’s purely a playing surface, meaning buyers need to purchase compatible pieces separately, and its size demands a significant setup area. Its durable plastic construction resists weather, but the weight makes relocating it cumbersome, especially if you want to change your setup frequently.
bestFor: Commercial venues or homeowners with ample outdoor space seeking a permanent, weatherproof chess surface.
notIdealFor: Buyers who want a ready-to-play set with pieces included or limited outdoor space, as this board alone requires additional investment and space planning.
- Weather-resistant and durable for long-term outdoor use
- Very large surface suitable for big games or events
- Compatible with various MegaChess sets
- Board only; pieces sold separately
- Requires significant space and effort to move
This board makes the most sense for those prioritizing a sturdy, outdoor-ready surface over convenience or integrated set features.
- Square Size:14.75 inches
- Total Board Size:118 inches x 118 inches
- Material:Plastic
- Weather Resistant:Yes
- Design:Black-and-white, smooth edges
MegaChess Giant Chess Set with 25″ Tall King, Durable All-Weather Indoor/Outdoor
This set excels for its combination of size, durability, and portability, featuring 25-inch tall pieces made from waterproof, UV-protected HDPE, making it easy to transport and set up on lawns, patios, or even larger indoor spaces. Compared with the 37-inch set, its more manageable size appeals to those who want big visibility without excessive bulk, yet it still offers optional upgrades for larger sizes. The inclusion of bases that can be filled with sand or water enhances stability, but the set’s weight can pose challenges for quick relocations or for smaller spaces. Since the chessboard is sold separately, it’s best suited for buyers who already have a suitable surface or are willing to purchase a compatible one.
bestFor: Families or educators seeking a durable, portable set that can be used in various outdoor settings or at events.
notIdealFor: Buyers looking for a complete package with a built-in playing surface or those with very limited space, due to the need for separate board purchase and the set’s size.
- Waterproof, UV-protected construction for outdoor resilience
- Large enough for high visibility and engaging gameplay
- Lightweight and portable for flexible use
- Chessboard sold separately; must be purchased separately
- Additional inserts needed for larger size upgrades
This pick suits those who want a sizable, weatherproof set that balances portability with impact on outdoor play.
- Number of Pieces:32 (16 black, 16 white)
- Material:High-density polyethylene (HDPE)
- Height:25 inches (upgrade options to 37 or 49 inches)
- Base Weight:Up to 7 lbs with sand or water
- Suitable for:Indoor and outdoor use
MegaChess Giant Chess Set with 37-Inch Tall King and 32 Large Pieces
This set features an impressive 37-inch tall king, making it a clear centerpiece for any outdoor game or event. Its 32 large, waterproof, UV-resistant plastic pieces are designed to withstand challenging weather conditions, making it ideal for permanent or semi-permanent outdoor setups. The set’s adjustable height from 25 to 49 inches adds versatility, enabling different levels of prominence depending on the occasion. Compared to the 25-inch set, this one commands more visual impact but is heavier, especially when filled with sand or water, which can hinder quick rearrangements. The included matching chess mat complements the set well but adds to the overall cost and setup complexity.
bestFor: Schools, large families, or event organizers needing a highly visible, weatherproof chess set that can serve as a focal point outdoors.
notIdealFor: Buyers with limited outdoor space or those seeking a lightweight, easily movable set for casual play or indoor use.
- Massive, eye-catching pieces suitable for outdoor visibility
- Weatherproof and durable for various climates
- Adjustable height for different display needs
- Heavy when filled; difficult to move frequently
- Large size may overwhelm small or tight spaces
This set makes the most sense for those prioritizing size and durability over ease of mobility or compactness.
- Number of Pieces:32
- King Height:37 inches
- Material:HDPE plastic
- Includes:Chess mat
- Adjustable Height:25 to 49 inches
- Weight Capacity:Up to 7 lbs per base
Our verdict“Best Oversized Set for Spectacle Play — a strong pick in this lineup.”

Factors to Consider When Choosing Best Giant Chess Sets For Patios
Choosing the best giant chess set for your patio involves considering several key factors. Size is important not only for visual impact but also for how easily you can manage and store the set. Material quality determines durability against weather elements, especially if exposed to rain or sun. Ease of setup and portability can make or break your enjoyment, particularly if you plan to move or store the set frequently. Price is another consideration, with larger, premium materials costing more but providing longer-lasting performance. Lastly, consider whether the set includes accessories like mats or storage options, which can enhance your overall experience.Size and Visibility
The size of the chess pieces and the playing surface directly influences how impressive and playable your setup will be. Larger sets with taller king pieces improve visibility from across the patio, making them ideal for gatherings or casual viewing. However, significantly oversized sets can be heavy and harder to move or store. Smaller giant sets are more manageable but may lose some visual impact. Balance your space constraints with how much you want the set to stand out in your outdoor area.
Material Durability and Weather Resistance
Since patio sets are exposed to outdoor elements, selecting weatherproof materials is essential. Plastic and resin options tend to resist moisture and UV rays better than painted wood or fabric-backed mats. Higher-quality sets often feature all-weather plastic or UV-treated components, extending their lifespan. Cheaper sets might fade or crack over time, requiring replacement sooner. Investing in durable materials can save you money and effort in maintenance and replacement.
Ease of Setup and Storage
Consider how easy it is to assemble, disassemble, and store your giant chess set. Sets with foldable or quick-assemble components save time and reduce frustration. Some models come with carrying cases or lightweight pieces, making it easier to relocate or store when not in use. Larger, permanently assembled sets may look more impressive but can be cumbersome to move, especially if your patio space is limited or you plan to store the set seasonally.
Price and Value
Giant chess sets vary widely in price, reflecting size, material quality, and included features. While budget models may suffice for casual use, investing in a higher-end set usually means better weather resistance, sturdier construction, and a more impressive appearance. Consider your intended level of use—frequent outdoor play or decorative display—and budget accordingly. Sometimes, spending a bit more upfront ensures longer-term satisfaction and durability.
Additional Features and Accessories
Some sets come with useful extras like protective mats, storage bags, or weighted pieces for stability. These features can enhance your overall experience, making setup quicker and maintenance easier. A well-designed mat can protect your patio surface from scratches and provide a stable playing area. Check if accessories are included or sold separately, and weigh their value based on how often you plan to use the set outdoors.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size giant chess set is best for a small patio?
For limited patio space, a set with 16-inch or 25-inch tall pieces offers a good balance between visibility and manageability. These sizes are large enough to be impressive but won’t overwhelm smaller areas or be too heavy to move easily. Choosing a set with foldable components or a compact storage option can also help fit the set into a smaller outdoor space when not in use.
Are plastic giant chess sets durable enough for outdoor use?
Yes, high-quality plastic or resin sets are designed specifically for outdoor environments. They resist moisture, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations better than painted or wooden options. However, cheaper plastic sets may fade or crack over time, so investing in UV-treated or weatherproof plastic ensures a longer lifespan. Regular cleaning can also maintain their appearance and performance.
How easy is it to transport large giant chess sets?
Transporting large sets depends on their weight and construction. Sets with lightweight plastic pieces and foldable mats are easier to move, especially if they come with carrying cases. Larger, heavier sets may require multiple people or equipment to relocate. If you plan to store the set seasonally, look for options with convenient disassembly features or lightweight components to simplify transportation.
What should I consider when choosing a giant chess set for family use?
For family-friendly outdoor chess, opt for sets with 16 to 25-inch tall pieces that are sturdy and safe for children. Durability and weather resistance are key, especially for active use. Sets with bright, contrasting colors improve visibility for players of all ages. Additionally, choosing a set with easy assembly and a stable base helps prevent accidents and makes setup quick for family gatherings.
Is it worth paying more for a premium giant chess set?
Investing in a premium set often means better weather resistance, larger size options, and more durable materials, which can translate into longer-lasting enjoyment. While the initial cost is higher, these sets typically require less maintenance and look more impressive on your patio. If you plan regular outdoor use or want a striking decorative piece, paying more can be a worthwhile investment for quality and longevity.
Conclusion
For most buyers, the Elongdi Giant Outdoor Chess Set offers a great balance of size, durability, and portability, making it an excellent overall choice. Those seeking the best value could consider more affordable plastic options that still withstand outdoor conditions. If budget isn’t a concern and you desire a truly impressive display, a large premium set with oversized pieces and weatherproof construction will serve well. Beginners or casual players will benefit from smaller, easier-to-move options, while dedicated outdoor enthusiasts should look for highly durable, weather-resistant models designed for long-term use. Ultimately, your choice depends on space, frequency of use, and how much you want your chess set to stand out in your patio.
