TL;DR

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense is using Avengers Labs to give approved defense companies access to annotated battlefield drone data inside a protected Brave1 Dataroom. In return, Ukraine keeps the trained AI models, a deal meant to improve target detection and drone interception without handing over raw combat footage.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense is opening protected access to a large battlefield computer-vision dataset through Avengers Labs, a Brave1 partnership program that lets approved defense companies train AI models on annotated combat drone footage while Ukraine keeps the finished models.

The program is built around the Brave1 Dataroom, a secure environment described in Ukrainian ministry material and partner reporting as a place where companies can train, validate and fine-tune models without taking raw combat footage out of the system.

The source material says the dataset includes millions of annotated visual and thermal frames from tens of thousands of real drone missions, covering aerial and ground targets in fog, rain, darkness, camouflage and heavy electronic warfare. More than 100 Ukrainian companies are said to already have access, with foreign developers entering through Avengers Labs.

The operational Avengers platform, developed by the Defense Ministry’s Innovation Center, uses computer vision to detect, classify and track hostile targets from drone and fixed-camera video. Ministry reporting cited in the source material says it flags about 12,000 enemy units per week and feeds the VEZHA video module inside Ukraine’s DELTA battlefield-management system.

Inside the Dataroom

  • Structured visual & thermal imagery of aerial and ground targets
  • Hard cases: camouflaged armor, night, fog, rain, multiple sensors
  • Feeds the Avengers platform inside the DELTA / VEZHA system
  • Focus track: automatic detection & interception of enemy drones

The goal

  • 100% of frontline drones with onboard machine vision
  • Autonomous navigation in GPS-denied / jammed (EW) skies
  • Autonomous Shahed interception — human keeps the trigger
  • Scaling vs. Shahed launches rising ~35% / month

Combat Data Becomes Leverage

The program matters because real, labeled battlefield data is one of the hardest inputs for defense AI to obtain. Commercial imagery, simulations and test-range footage do not fully match drone video gathered under jamming, bad weather, camouflage and live fire.

By keeping the data inside the Dataroom and requiring partners to return improved models, Ukraine is treating battlefield data as a strategic asset rather than a byproduct of war. If the model-sharing loop works as described, Kyiv could speed up detection, drone navigation and counter-drone systems while giving allied firms access to rare training conditions.

Brave1 Built The Channel

Brave1 is Ukraine's state-backed defense-innovation cluster. The Dataroom was built by the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the Armed Forces, a military-intelligence research institute and Palantir, according to the source material.

The project follows Ukraine's rapid wartime expansion of drone production and AI-assisted battlefield tools after Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Washington Post reporting in January 2026 cited Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov saying Ukraine had a plan to stop Russia in its skies through AI-supported air defense, including systems trained on years of sensor and imagery data.

"We have a clear plan about how to stop Russia in our skies."

Access Rules Remain Opaque

It is not yet clear which foreign companies will gain access, how model ownership will be enforced, or how results will be audited before use near the front line. The exact size and composition of the dataset have not been independently verified.

Claims that Ukraine holds the world's only large-scale real-war computer-vision dataset come from Ukrainian officials and the source material. The battlefield impact of returned models, including against Shahed-type drones, remains a developing question.

Models Move Toward Deployment

The next test is whether models trained in the Dataroom improve systems already linked to DELTA and VEZHA. Ukrainian officials have set goals that include onboard machine vision for frontline drones, navigation in GPS-denied skies and automated Shahed interception with human control over firing decisions.
